Fan-o-tron and other wonders

Fan-O-Tron. Direct experience of modulation, centred on an optical analogue synthesiser, processing signals with light rather than in circuitry. Complex interphasing shadows from spot-lit fans are converted into sound, resulting in simultaneous visual and aural experience of the same unearthly dirge.

I enjoyed the open-endedness of this. Rather than a structured performance, the show facilitators simply wander around explaining and demonstrating the Fan-o-tron and other bits and pieces, and leave the audience to listen, look and fiddle as they wish. The audience participation was great, it was highly enjoyable to be able to play with the Fan-o-tron, work things out for yourself, and try and make amazing sounds using the Fan-o-tron. It's also a very social event. I had some heavy discussions about sound, frequencies, resonance, overtones, and beat frequencies, as well as learning something new about piano tuning. Definitely glad I went.
