Biggest Fringe ever closes, winners named

The New Zealand Fringe Festival closed today with an awards ceremony and closing night party in Wellington, drawing to an end the biggest and most successful Fringe in its 19-year history.

The following list contains the winners of the 13 Fringe 08 award categories, and (when applicable) each categories Very Highly Commended (VHC) and Highly Commended (HC) honours. The grand prize is the Best of Fringe. The awards ceremony was held 7pm Sunday March 2, 2008 at the Paramount Theatre, Courtenay Place, Wellington.

A very Fringe picnic

Wellington's Civic Square comes alive this weekend with The Fringe Festival's own unique brand of picnic – The Fricnic, and it's best buddy, Chalk the Walk – helped by our best buddies, Capital E and Creature Design. The Fricnic and Chalk the Walk are two events that are part of the Free Fringe programme, set for this Saturday, February 16 from 11am till 3pm at Civic Square.

Well we're on. We're running. Fringe 08 has begun. Friday saw the first day of the monumentally massive 2008 New Zealand Fringe Festival, although quite a few shows already had a head start on the others (Sleep / Wake, we're looking at you!) and then we really kicked into gear over the weekend with a packed-to-the-gunnels gig Surfin' on the Fringe, featuring more surf rock than you could shake a tail feather at. The other big event for Fringe Central was the launch of the All New and certainly improved Chit Chat Lounge. The Chit Chat Lounge runs every night (except for Sundays and Mondays) from 10pm at The Paramount Theatre and hosts Derek Flores and Vinyl Burns with band the Flavour of Yesterday bringing you the essential oil, the inside word and the absurd birds for all things Fringe. It's a talk show, and it's damn good. Saturday's show saw 90 people lap up the bastard child of Letterman.
